Hotel vs. Furnished Apartment for a 30+ Night Stay in Anchorage

By Alex, your Stay Anchorage host since 2011 · Updated

Short answer

For 30 nights or more, a furnished apartment usually fits daily life better than a hotel room: you get a full kitchen, separate bedrooms and laundry in the building. Room tax is not the deciding factor, because Anchorage's 12% room tax applies only to stays under 30 days, at hotels and apartments alike. A hotel can make more sense for a few nights, or if you want a front desk and on-site services.

What changes at 30 nights

Anchorage collects a 12% room tax on rentals of less than 30 days of continuous occupancy. The Municipality's room tax page lists hotels, motels, corporate suites, vacation rentals and apartments alike. Book 30 consecutive nights or more and that tax doesn't apply, whichever kind of lodging you choose. So the real comparison is what you get for the money.

At Stay Anchorage, 30 nights is also where pricing and terms change. Stays of 30+ nights are sold at one rate, our best rate, with the extended-stay cancellation terms; the refundable rate is offered on stays under 30 nights only. Stays of 30+ nights are billed monthly, and paying by ACH bank transfer avoids the 3% card processing fee on those longer stays. See Monthly Furnished Stays for the details.

Where the cost difference really shows up

Over a month, the nightly rate is only part of the bill. These are the line items that tend to decide it:

  • Rate: stays of 30+ nights get our discounted monthly rates. Check live rates for your dates.
  • Food: a full kitchen means groceries instead of eating out for every meal. New Sagaya City Market is a 14-minute walk (0.7 mi) from the apartments.
  • Laundry: washing clothes in the building beats paying for laundry service.
  • Space: two bedrooms mean a family, or two coworkers, don't need two hotel rooms.
  • Payment: on 30+ night stays, ACH bank transfer avoids the 3% card fee.
  • Parking: free here. At a hotel, ask before you book.

When a hotel is the better call

  • Short stays of a few nights, where a kitchen and laundry matter less.
  • You want a staffed front desk, on-site dining or other hotel services.
  • You need more than two bedrooms under one roof. Our apartments sleep 4–5.

Who a month-long furnished stay suits

The apartments are set up for the stays that run a month or more: military families on TDY or PCS orders (JBER housing), clinicians on contract (travel nurse housing), medical visitors near Providence Hospital, and people relocating who need a base while they look for a long-term place.

Frequently asked questions

Do hotels in Anchorage charge room tax on a 30-night stay?

Anchorage's 12% room tax applies to rentals of less than 30 days of continuous occupancy, and the Municipality lists hotels as well as apartments and vacation rentals. A stay of 30 consecutive nights or more falls outside it at either kind of lodging.

Are there discounts for staying a month or longer?

Yes. We offer discounted monthly rates on stays of 30 nights or more, applied automatically when you search your dates. Check live rates for your dates for up-to-the-minute pricing.

What is included in a furnished apartment?

Every unit has a full kitchen, all linens and towels, 2.5Gb-powered WiFi, a 60"+ smart TV, free parking and shared coin-op laundry in the building. Nothing to buy or ship ahead of your arrival.

How does check-in work without a front desk?

Check-in is 4:00 PM and check-out is 11:00 AM. Check-in is self-service with a keypad door code emailed before you arrive, so late flights aren't a problem.

What is the best way to pay for a monthly stay?

ACH bank transfer has no card fee on 30+ night stays. Credit and debit cards carry a 3% processing fee on stays of 30 nights or more.
